Mariana Bracetti was a Puerto Rican revolutionary who played a significant role in the Grito de Lares, the first attempt to establish an independent Puerto Rico. In 1868, she sewed the first Puerto Rican flag, named the "Lares Flag" or "Revolutionary Flag", which was used as a symbol of rebellion against the Spanish colonial rule. Bracetti was an active member of the secret society, known as the "La Liga de la Independencia", and she fought alongside her husband, Manuel Rojas, during the Lares uprising. After the rebellion was crushed, she was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment, but she was later released due to the intervention of the United States government. Bracetti is recognized as a national hero in Puerto Rico, and her legacy continues to inspire current generations of Puerto Rican independence activists.
